Why This Spot Is So Special
The defining feature of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône is its enormous breakwater, known locally as the mole.
Stretching for roughly one to two kilometers into the sea, it creates a large protected area where the water becomes incredibly flat when the wind blows from the typical Mistral direction.
This combination of strong wind and smooth water creates ideal conditions for bigair riding, progression sessions and filming. Many of the action shots you've seen in my videos were filmed right here.
The riding area itself is massive. Unlike many crowded Mediterranean spots, you'll rarely feel limited by space.
The Mistral Wind
The dominant wind here is the Mistral.
This cold northwesterly wind travels down the Rhône Valley before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. Once a Mistral forecast appears, there's a good chance you'll enjoy several consecutive windy days.
One of the biggest advantages of the Mistral is its reliability. Rather than delivering a few random hours of wind, it often blows for four or five days in a row.
Another benefit is the weather. Mistral days usually come with clear skies, excellent visibility and beautiful light conditions. That's one of the reasons I come here so often to filming.
Riding Conditions
When the Mistral blows at its typical angle, the breakwater creates an extensive flat-water area on its protected side.
The result is smooth water that is perfect for:
Freestyle
Big air takeoffs
Progression sessions
Wingfoiling
Speed runs
Depending on the exact wind direction, the flat-water section can become exceptionally smooth.
Even outside the protected area, riders can spread out across the entire bay, making the spot feel endless.
Launch Areas and Setup
One of the advantages of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône is the amount of available space.
Most riders set up on the large grassy areas near the beach. Launching is generally straightforward, but there is one important detail worth mentioning.
Near the main parking area stands a large building. Setting up directly downwind of this structure can create disturbed wind conditions. Before launching, make sure you're standing in clean airflow with sufficient wind.
The good news is that the launch area is huge, so finding a safe setup zone is rarely a problem.
Parking and Vanlife
Parking is easy compared to many other European kite destinations.
The main parking area near the harbor is where most locals leave their vehicles. Smaller camper vans can usually park there without issues.
For larger camper vans, additional parking spaces can be found near the nearby residential area. During the off-season, finding a spot is generally very easy.
Although overnight stays are not always officially permitted everywhere, the area has traditionally been popular among traveling riders and vanlifers.
As always, respect local regulations and leave the area cleaner than you found it.
Pump Foiling
Pump foil riders will also find a nice surprise here.
The harbor area includes a dock that provides convenient access for pump foil sessions. On non-windy days, it's a fun alternative and adds another reason to visit the spot.
Things to Watch Out For
There is one small but annoying detail many first-time visitors discover the hard way.
The grassy areas near the beach are covered with small sticky seed pods during certain periods of the year.
Walking barefoot through the grass often results in dozens of these seeds attaching themselves to your feet or getting trapped inside your shoes.
A simple solution is to wear flip-flops or shoes whenever you're crossing the grassy sections.
It sounds like a minor issue until you've spent ten minutes pulling them out of your feet.
Final Thoughts
Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône may not be the most picturesque kite spot in Europe, but what it lacks in scenery it more than makes up for in riding quality.
Reliable Mistral winds, enormous launch areas, easy parking and one of the best flat-water sections in southern France make it a destination I return to again and again.
If your perfect session involves strong wind, smooth water and plenty of space to ride, Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône should definitely be on your bucket list.
