Why Lake Silvaplana Is So Special
Very few lakes in Europe are as perfectly adapted to wind sports as Lake Silvaplana.
Over the years, the local community has recognized how important kitesurfers, windsurfers, wingfoilers, and pumpfoilers are for the region. Instead of restricting access, they have continuously invested in improving the spot and its infrastructure.
One example is the dedicated pumpfoil dock built specifically for pumpfoiling. It's one of the few facilities of its kind and one of the reasons why Silvaplana has become a true pumpfoil hotspot.
Combined with the stunning mountain backdrop of the Engadin Valley, the result is a world-class watersports destination unlike anywhere else in Europe.
The Famous Maloja Wind
The biggest reason riders travel to Silvaplana is the reliable Maloja wind.
This thermal wind system is closely related to the famous Breva wind at Lake Como. The difference is that Silvaplana sits roughly 1,800 meters above sea level, deep in the Swiss Alps.
On sunny days with a light southerly airflow, the valley begins to heat up and the thermal wind usually starts building around early afternoon.
Because of its consistency, riders often focus more on the weather forecast than on the predicted wind strength itself.
If the weather is sunny and the wind direction is favorable, chances are good that the Maloja wind will deliver.
Wind Strength
Most summer days bring wind strengths between 15 and 25 knots.
However, due to the altitude, the thinner mountain air generates less power than the same wind speed at sea level. As a result, 20 knots at Silvaplana can feel closer to 15–18 knots at a coastal spot.
Many riders therefore use slightly larger kites and wings than they would normally choose for the same forecast elsewhere.
Kitesurfing at Lake Silvaplana
The kitesurfing area is located north of the campsite.
Here you'll find a large grass field used for setting up, launching, and landing kites. The area is professionally managed and offers one of the most comfortable kite setups you'll find on any European lake.
The land is rented annually from a local farmer and maintained by the kite station. Because of this, kitesurfers are required to purchase either a day pass or a seasonal pass.
If you're planning to visit multiple times during the summer, the yearly pass quickly becomes worthwhile.
To keep things safe and organized, launching and landing are only permitted within the designated grass area. Entry and exit points are clearly marked and help reduce conflicts during busy days.
Wingfoiling and Windsurfing
South of the campsite you'll find the windsurf and wingfoil station.
The station features its own small harbor and direct access to the water, making launching simple and convenient.
One particularly interesting service offered by the station is their beginner-friendly downwinder program.
Wingfoil beginners are transported upwind to Sils together with their equipment. From there, they can practice in a much more relaxed environment and simply drift back downwind toward Silvaplana.
This setup allows beginners to focus entirely on learning without worrying about staying upwind.
Pumpfoiling
Lake Silvaplana has become one of Europe's most recognized pumpfoil destinations.
The dedicated pumpfoil dock allows riders to train efficiently without interfering with other water users.
Combined with the calm morning conditions and strong local pumpfoil community, the lake offers ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced riders looking to improve their technique.
Crowds and Spot Rules
During sunny summer weekends, Silvaplana can become very busy.
Kitesurfers, wingfoilers, windsurfers, pumpfoilers, hikers, cyclists, and tourists all share the same area.
The local stations have done an excellent job creating clear systems that keep everything running smoothly. Respecting launch zones, entry points, and station guidelines helps ensure that everyone can enjoy the spot safely.
A little cooperation goes a long way here.
Best Time to Visit
The summer season in the Engadin is relatively short.
The best months for kitesurfing and wingfoiling are typically June, July, and August.
Daytime temperatures often reach around 25°C, while the surrounding mountains provide spectacular scenery and comfortable temperatures even during heat waves elsewhere in Europe.
Winter and Snowkiting
Winter transforms Lake Silvaplana into a completely different playground.
For roughly six months of the year, the lake freezes and becomes covered with snow.
When conditions align, it offers some of the best snowkiting opportunities in the Alps. The wide-open frozen lake provides plenty of space, reliable winds, and breathtaking mountain views.
For many riders, winter is just as exciting as summer.
Accommodation
Despite its alpine location, Silvaplana offers a surprisingly wide range of accommodation options.
Visitors can choose between hotels, apartments, holiday rentals, and one of the most spectacular campsites in Europe.
The campsite sits directly at the spot, allowing riders to wake up, check the wind from their camper, and be on the water within minutes.
For anyone who enjoys vanlife, it's difficult to imagine a better setup.
Food & Facilities
Everything you need is within walking distance.
Two restaurants are located directly next to the campsite, while the village of Silvaplana offers additional restaurants, cafés, shops, and a small supermarket.
The compact layout makes everyday logistics incredibly easy, even without a car.
Local Tip
Before or after your session, stop by Pappa Lou.
The relaxed atmosphere, great food, and direct view of the water make it one of my favorite places around the lake.
Sitting there with a meal while watching wingfoilers and windsurfers flying across the water is the perfect way to end a windy day.
Final Thoughts
Lake Silvaplana combines reliable thermal wind, stunning alpine scenery, excellent infrastructure, and a welcoming watersports community in a way that very few destinations can match.
Whether you're into kitesurfing, wingfoiling, pumpfoiling, windsurfing, or snowkiting, this place offers something special in every season.
And once you've experienced a sunny Maloja afternoon surrounded by the Swiss Alps, you'll probably find yourself planning your next trip before you've even left.
