Hidden kite and foil spot in southern France with consistent wind, playful waves, vanlife access and perfect conditions for wingfoiling and parawinging.
Spot Guide: Plage de Bonnieu 🇫🇷
“Welcome to the chemical laboratory.”
That’s what I started calling this spot after accidentally discovering it a few years ago while scouting the French coast. Since then, I keep coming back every year because it offers a unique mix of wind, waves, and foiling conditions in a very special atmosphere.
If you're looking for consistent Mediterranean wind, playful waves, clean foil conditions and a raw, uncrowded beach vibe, Plage de Bonnieu should be on your list.
What to Expect
Consistent Mediterranean wind (often lasting multiple days)
Fun, rounded waves ideal for foiling
Super playful conditions for wingfoiling & parawing
Small but cozy beach parking / vanlife setup
Multiple water access points around the bay
Less ideal for kitesurfing (better suited for foil sports)
Unique industrial, slightly “abandoned” atmosphere
Why This Spot is Special
What makes this place stand out is the combination of accessibility and conditions.
On one side, you’ve got a very relaxed vanlife setup directly at the beach. You can wake up, step out of the van, and basically be in the water within minutes. That alone already makes it worth a visit.
On the water side, the bay offers a mix of playful wave energy and surprisingly clean wind. The waves are not heavy or critical – instead, they are round, soft, and perfect for all kinds of foiling.
Whether you’re on a wingfoil, parawing or pump foil setup, this place gives you endless variations to play with.
Wind Conditions
The biggest advantage of this spot is the reliability of the wind.
When the mistral or regional thermal systems kick in, it can blow for several days in a row. During my last stay, I had almost a full week of wind with only one calm day in between.
Once it starts, it usually doesn’t stop quickly.
The wind direction works well for the bay setup, but local effects can vary depending on where you enter the water.
Riding Conditions
This is clearly a foil-first spot.
The waves are:
Rounded and soft
Very forgiving
Perfect for carving
Ideal for learning and progressing
For wingfoiling, it’s honestly one of the more playful setups in the region. You can ride lines along the bay, use the swell, or just cruise and explore.
Parawinging and pump foiling also work extremely well thanks to the inside sections of the bay where the water can become very flat.
There are even a few small dock-style entry points that make dock-starts and easy water access possible, depending on conditions.
For Kitesurfing the launch area is quite limited, rocky and small. If your focus is kiteboarding, you’ll likely find better options nearby.
Vanlife & Setup
One of the best parts of this spot is the vanlife experience.
You can park very close to the beach and stay right next to the water. The atmosphere is calm, industrial, and very different from typical tourist beaches.
It’s not a polished holiday resort – and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.
During off-season, sleeping here has always been easy and relaxed. In peak summer, things might be stricter and more crowded, so conditions can change a lot depending on the time of year.
Final Thoughts
This spot is not about perfection. It’s about character.
It has wind, waves, foil playgrounds, vanlife freedom, and a very unique atmosphere that keeps pulling me back again and again.
It might not be the easiest or most polished location in southern France, but it’s definitely one of the most interesting ones.
If you’re travelling through the region, take the time to stop here. Chances are high you’ll end up staying longer than planned.
