One spot. Two completely different playgrounds.
Spot Guide: Hyeres 🇫🇷
Almanarre is one of the most versatile kite spots in Europe. Thanks to its unique location, it works perfectly with both of the Mediterranean's main wind directions: east and west.
If you're looking for flat water, waves, strong Mediterranean winds and year-round riding, Almanarre should be on your list.
What to Expect
Works with both east and west wind
Flat water and waves at the same location
Clean wind with very few obstacles
Suitable for kitesurfing and wingfoiling
Wind strengths from 15 to 50 knots
Great winter destination
Why Almanarre Works So Well
The spot is located on a long sandbar connected to the Giens Peninsula. Because there are very few mountains, forests or large obstacles nearby, the wind stays remarkably clean compared to many other Mediterranean spots.
The sandbar sits almost perfectly perpendicular to both east and west winds, allowing riders to choose between completely different conditions depending on which side they launch from.
East Wind Conditions
During easterly winds, Almanarre offers two completely different playgrounds.
On the windward side near La Bergerie, you'll find waves and onshore conditions, making it a fun option for riders who enjoy more dynamic water conditions.
On the opposite side near Almanarre, the water becomes incredibly flat. Long-distance runs along the sandbar are possible, and the surface can be almost mirror smooth.
Because the water becomes deep very quickly, both kitesurfers and wingfoilers can enjoy excellent riding conditions. However, keep in mind that the offshore side also comes with the risk of drifting away if something goes wrong.
West Wind Conditions
When the wind switches to the west, the setup changes completely.
Almanarre itself becomes a side-onshore spot with moderate chop, offering great conditions for kitesurfing.
On the opposite side near Alma Café, wingfoilers can enjoy fun wave conditions.
La Bergerie becomes much gustier during west winds because of nearby trees and buildings. While this makes it less attractive for kitesurfing, wingfoilers can still enjoy the flat water there.
Wind Strength
One of the reasons Almanarre is so popular is the wide range of conditions.
Wind speeds commonly range from 15 to over 50 knots depending on the weather system. Because of this, I highly recommend bringing your full quiver if you're planning a trip.
Best Time to Visit
Almanarre gets extremely crowded during summer.
Personally, I avoid the spot from late April until early October. During winter, however, it becomes one of my favorite places in Europe.
Daytime temperatures often reach around 15°C, the beaches are much quieter, and the wind quality is generally better.
Accommodation & Vanlife
The area offers plenty of campsites, apartments and holiday rentals.
If you're travelling with a camper van, you'll usually find plenty of places to stay during the off-season. During summer, regulations tend to be stricter.
One thing worth mentioning is that theft can occasionally be an issue in parts of southern France. Personally, I've never had any problems, but some friends have not been as lucky. Keeping valuables out of sight and using basic security precautions is always a good idea.
Final Thoughts
Very few spots in Europe offer such a unique combination of flat water, waves and reliable wind.
Whether you're into kitesurfing, wingfoiling or simply looking for a winter escape, Almanarre is a destination that deserves a place on every rider's bucket list.
