Overcoming a two-year mental block.
This Is Starting to Piss Me Off
Thermal winds, a recovering dog, and a trick I've been avoiding for two years. In this vlog, I share the ups and downs of getting back on the water and challenging myself to finally attempt the Back Mobe 5 again.
Facing the Back Mobe 5 Again After 2 Years
Some crashes leave more than just bruises. Two years ago, I had a brutal crash while attempting a Back Mobe 5. The mistake I made back then was allowing that crash to affect me too much. In that moment, I didn't find the calmness to reflect, reset, and immediately give the trick another try. Ever since, I avoided it, and my fear of the trick kept growing.
The interesting thing about fear is that it gets bigger when you don't face it and don't try to overcome it. Buddhists say that you have to walk through your fear – that it's the only real way to deal with it.
This spring was anything but relaxing anyway. My dog, Linsenberga, suffered a serious foot injury that stayed with us for more than two months while we tried to heal it through conservative treatment. Having an injured dog constantly by your side with a lifestyle like mine is a real challenge. When we finally decided to go ahead with surgery, I wanted to give both of us the time and peace we needed for a proper recovery so that we could eventually get back into the kite flow.
Paradoxically, that was exactly when I felt ready to face the Back Mobe 5 again.
So I slowly worked my way back to the trick, one step at a time. My goal wasn't to land a perfect Back Mobe 5 right away. What mattered most was overcoming my fear of the trick so I could bring it back into my regular training routine.
Whether I finally managed to land it and what the journey back looked like is something you'll find out in the vlog.
