Brazil Off Season Kitesurfing: Sun, Wind & Empty Lagoons
Brazil’s Off-Season: My Favorite Time 🇧🇷
Brazil in the off season means sun, steady wind, and moments when the lagoon feels like it belongs to you alone. Sometimes the best trips don’t happen at peak season — but exactly when everyone else has already left.
Brazil in the Off Season: Sun, Wind & Empty Lagoons
Welcome to Brazil — where the sun never seems to stop shining, the wind rarely takes a break, and buggies casually cruise along the beach as if that's the most normal thing in the world.
It's 5:00 a.m. at Zurich airport. While most people are still deep in winter mode, we're already on a flight across the Atlantic. Destination: Brazil.
And yes — once again, we're at least a month later than most people heading here for kitesurfing.
Last year, we arrived too late and had to cut the trip short when the rainy season kicked in. This time, we adjusted the plan. Three weeks earlier than last year, aiming for that perfect window where most travelers have already left, but the wind is still blowing every single day.
Arriving in Taíba — Chaos Before the Calm
The first few days back at the Taíba lagoon were far from perfect. The place was absolutely packed — loads of kitesurfers, tons of beginners, and barely any space for focused freestyle sessions.
Between Christmas and New Year, half of Brazil seems to move to the beach. Some come to kite, others line up their 4x4s right at the water's edge, drink beer, and blast music at full volume. Since I'd seen this madness in previous years, I stayed relaxed and watched the spectacle from the beach.
On top of that, winter was still deep in my body. I knew I wasn't fit enough yet to really send it high — but, as always, I couldn't help myself. One heavy crash later, probably the hardest backside edge I've ever taken, I was forced to take a few days off.
And honestly? Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
It finally gave me time to truly arrive in Brazil — and to take care of the really important things in life.
Eat, Sleep, Kite, Repeat — Back in the Rhythm
After a few days of rest, I returned to the lagoon feeling fresh again — and suddenly, it was empty.
No crowds. No chaos. Just wind, glassy water, endless space, and silence.
That moment when you realize: now it begins.
Whoever says Brazilian kite spots are always overcrowded has clearly never been here at the right time.
All of a sudden, Taíba was exactly what we'd hoped for — consistent wind and an almost empty lagoon. Session after session. Day after day. Simply epic.
Buggy Life — A Brazilian Experiment
There's one thing you can't ignore in Brazil: buggies.
Everyone has one. Everyone drives one. Everyone — except me. Until now.
This is my third year in Brazil, and after two straight weeks of being on the water every single day, I needed a bit of variety. So... buggy time. You can rent these things on almost every corner for about 25 euros a day. But whether I'd actually vibe with the buggy lifestyle? I wasn't so sure.
Just because you can drive them on the beach doesn't mean you can't get stuck. In fact, knowing that it's possible makes you feel unstoppable — until you bury the thing in the sand on your very first ride. Which, of course, we did.
Still, I have to admit: the buggy lifestyle is pretty damn fun — even if these things are insanely loud. Will it ever replace my trusty Fiat Moby? Probably not. A lockable trunk has its advantages.
But you can see all of that in the vlog.
Perfect Timing & Wind Every Single Day
Looking back, we couldn't have planned this trip any better.
Out of 35 days in Taíba, we had wind every single day. Most of the time, the lagoon was empty — exactly the conditions you need to really focus, progress, and enjoy kiting without compromise.
Brazil delivered — once again.
Sometimes it's not about being first.
Sometimes it's about showing up exactly when everyone else has already left.
