Cruising in Hyères

One spot. Two completely different playgrounds.

Spot Guide: Hyeres 🇫🇷

Looking for a kite spot that offers both endless flat water and fun waves? Almanarre in Southern France is one of Europe's most unique kitesurfing destinations.

Almanarre in Southern France is one of the most versatile kite spots in Europe. Thanks to its unique geographical setting, the spot works exceptionally well in both easterly and westerly winds.

With an easterly wind, you can choose between waves on the windward side or mirror-flat water on the sheltered side of the seemingly endless sand spit. When the wind turns westerly, the conditions reverse, creating new playgrounds for both kitesurfing and wingfoiling. Wind speeds typically range from 15 to 50 knots, making Almanarre suitable for everything from relaxed cruising and freeriding to true big air sessions in strong winds.

During summer, the spot can become very crowded and touristy, which is why I mainly come here in winter. Even during the colder months, you'll find consistent wind, far fewer people, and surprisingly mild temperatures for this part of Europe.

If you're planning a trip to Almanarre, be sure to watch the video below. It provides a complete overview of the launch areas, wind directions, local tips, and everything else you need to know before heading out on the water.
