Freedom Is a Way of Life – Kitesurfing, Vanlife & a Year of Freedom
2025: Freedom Is My Greatest Value
As the year comes to an end, I slow down and reflect — a process that begins for me while editing my annual Best Of video. From a childhood fear of water to a life built around it, and from van life to constant motion, this year reminded me that freedom is my greatest value.
Freedom Is My Greatest Value
For more than six years now, I've been living in my camper van.
Life in a van is definitely not an easy or stress-free life. Quite the opposite — it's often demanding. You feel that especially when something breaks again and you find yourself lying under the van, covered in oil, on some random parking lot, trying to figure out what's wrong this time.
And yet, I know exactly why I live the way I do.
Right now, the camper van is the best way I know to follow the wind with complete flexibility while always carrying my own little shell with me. Constantly on the move, yet still at home — whether by the sea or at minus ten degrees next to a half-frozen mountain lake in the Swiss Alps, parked right at the water's edge, in places where I could never afford a hotel room in my life.
My highly reduced life in the van makes me free.
And that freedom — something I became especially aware of this year — is what I want to protect and cultivate even more.
Freestyle = Freedom
The highlight of my annual recap had to be dedicated to my greatest passion: freestyle kitesurfing. To this day, it remains the most demanding and challenging discipline kitesurfing has to offer — and yet this unique art form is slowly fading into the background.
I'm genuinely obsessed with it.
When I wake up in the morning, I think about freestyle.
When I go to bed at night, I think about freestyle.
It's with me every single day, and almost all the kitesurfing content I watch online revolves around perfectly executed freestyle tricks.
The better I become in this discipline, the greater the distance I feel to the very best — and with that, my respect for their extraordinary performance grows.
In my love for this discipline, I can completely lose myself.
During a flowing freestyle session, I'm so focused that everything else around me slowly fades away.
I feel free.
More Than a Year in Review
This Best Of video is more than just a collection of clips.
It's my personal reflection on a year filled with movement, doubts, decisions, and moments where everything felt exactly right.
It shows life on the road, the search for wind, the silence between sessions — and my deep connection to freestyle kitesurfing.
Everything that's hard to put into words comes to life there through images, sounds, and emotion.
If you want to understand what freedom means to me,
if you want to see what this year really looked like,
then I invite you to watch the film.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
